Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen (1818-1888) had an extremely important role in the development of the financial industry in Austria and Germany. He founded the first credit union in 1847 and during the years, the Raiffeisen concept spread around the world: credit unions began their activities not just in Europe, but also in the USA, Japan, India, Canada and Australia.
